Once known for mobile home parks, early bird specials, lawn bowling and shuffleboard, St. Petersburg’s reputation has dramatically evolved in over the last few decades. The average age has decreased to 39, and the city is now lined with a myriad of hip and trendy cafes, bars and cultural venues.

In St. Petersburg, museums are cool. The iconic Dali Museum, for example, displays Salvador Dali’s work in a building that debuted in 2011 and includes a flowing geodesic dome known as the “Enigma.” Down the street, the Chihuly Collection presented by Morean Arts Center features some of the most brilliant and intricate creations of famous glass artist Dale Chihuly. The Museum of Fine Arts presents works by Monet, Gauguin, Renoir and O’Keeffe among others. The Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts – Mahaffey Theater hosts major shows and entertainers. Built in 1925, the Palladium Theater is a performing arts venue that is intimate and majestic.

Most of the aforementioned venues are situated along Beach Drive, where many baseball history enthusiasts will recognize the former Al Lang Stadium, which is now Progress Energy Park and is home to baseball games and soccer’s Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Day and night, Beach Drive is brimming with pedestrians exploring the attractions and dining at local favorites like Tryst Gastro Lounge, BellaBrava, Park Shore Grill and Cassis American Brasserie.

Because of the city’s charter, the bayfront can’t be developed so it’s perfect for walking or bicycling. Residents can bike, jog or walk along the water and venture through Straub Park and Vinoy Park. The bayfront water is teeming with dolphins and manatees, and the pathways are lined with benches where visitors can treasure the spectacular waterfront view.
